2010 Russian Resurrection Film Festival
Presented in association with BHP
Billiton and the Russkiy Mir Foundation
Opening Night Films & Special Events
As the winter freeze
takes its grip, self-proclaimed Russophiles, film-fanatics and culture-vultures
everywhere are lining up for a warming vodka shot and their annual fix of
all-things-Russian at the 7th annual Russian Resurrection
Film Festival, which kicks off its national tour in Sydney on Thursday
19th August. The wave of Russian cinema will then hit Melbourne
on Wednesday 25 August, Brisbane on Wednesday 1 September, Perth
on Wednesday 8 September, followed closely by Adelaide on Thursday 9
September and finally Canberra on Wednesday 15 September.
And if boasting the
biggest showcase of Russian cinema outside of its homeland wasn’t enough, the
Festival is bringing its folkloric feats to a new high, with a smorgasbord of
special events:
Opening Night
Films and Parties!
Each capital city will
again play host to the renowned Russian Resurrection Film Festival Opening
Night Parties, immersing guests in the
delights of Russian hospitality. On the menu will be a delectable array of
blinis, balalaika, and legendary Russian Standard vodka that will keep you
dancing all night long.
In Sydney,
Melbourne and Perth, audiences will be left swooning after seeing Dmitry
Meskhiev’s Man at
the Window (2010). This new romantic comedy challenges the best French films of this genre, and tells a story about the
vagaries of love and the acute observation of human drama.
Adelaide and Canberra will open with
the premiere of Vera Glagoleva’s multi-award winning film One War (2009), a powerful and
highly emotional drama which brings to light an unknown chapter in the history of World War II.
Brisbane will open with Andrei Kavun’s blockbuster Kandahar (2010), an action-drama set in
1995, based on the true
story of a freight-aircraft crew who were held hostage by the Taliban in
Afghanistan for 378 days.
Behind the Scenes of Kandahar with Director Andrei Kavun
and Australian special effects producer
Kent Miklenda
Sydney: 9.30pm Sat 28 August
Brisbane: 7.00pm Wed 1 Sept
Melbourne: 6.30pm Sunday 5 Sept
The phenomenal special
effects that propelled action-drama Kandahar to Russian blockbuster status
will be revealed by Director Andrei Kavun, and his Australian special
effects maestro Kent Miklenda at selected sessions during the
festival. Based on true events, Kandahar describes the capture of an
Ilyushin-76 freight aircraft by the Taliban in 1995. Accused of shipping arms the crew were imprisoned for over a year
and almost forgotten by the outside world. Along with casting some of Russia’s
finest actors, the film is punctuated by intense action scenes and stunning
visual effects of the airborne Ilyushin-76.
The special effects
supervisor and crew for the film were lead by Kent Miklenda, an Australia
special effects technician with credits including Superman Returns (2006), Mission
Impossible 2 (2000), Babe: Pig In The
City (1998) and The Piano (1993).
Kent met director Andrei Kavun at the Russian Resurrection Festival in Sydney
in 2006 where Andrei was showing his previous blockbuster Hunting Piranhas. A friendship formed, and the pair then started
work on the production of Kandahar
together in 2007. Their special ‘behind the scenes’ presentation will unveil
photographs from the production set, which will be projected onto the big screen.
